Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media in addition to a public speaking Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational and non-profit site that examines female representations in narratives from popular culture. Determined to challenge the assumptions about women and popular culture, she is also working in highlighting issues relating specifically to the harassment of women, as well as the marginalized groups of online area. Sarkeesian graduated with a master's degree in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has been a speaker at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since an early age. When she was in 2009, she was still studying at university, Sarkeesian launched the website Feminist Frequency. It was the time to release a set of videos on the web that looked at female representation in video games and was the target of online harassment. The attack did be a deterrent, but it only bolstered her determination to be a feminist media critic. Her work has earned her numerous awards for her numerous prominent contributions to the field of feministism.
